ORS , Composition of reduced osmolarity ORS

Reduces osmolarity ors:-

Sodium chloride - - 2.6 g/l
Glucose anhydrous - 13.5 g/l
Potassium chloride - 1.5 g/l
Trisodium citrate,dihydrate - 2.9 g/l

Total weight = 20.5 g/l

Reduces osmolarity ORS:-

Sodium:- 75 mol/L
Potassium:- 20 mol/L
Chloride:- 65 mol/L
Glucose anhydrase :- 75 mol/ L
Citrate :- 10mol/ L

Total osmolarity:- 245 mol/ L

Advantage of reduced osmolarity ORS:-

Reduced osmolarity ors is more stable and resulted in less stool output probably because of direct effect of trisodium citrate in increasing the water and salt absorption from intestine.

When zinc is supplied during an acute episode of diarrhea, it reduces episode duration and severity.
